Dev Log Week 15: Honey, I Shrunk the Scene

Ok, the caffeine hasn’t kicked in yet, but we’re rolling with it anyway.

This week I spent most of my time building out scenes that were a little too ambitious for my 4080’s 16GB of VRAM. With some optimisation and a few tears, I managed to make it work. It’s tough because I’m a greedy boy who wants to cram more and more detail into every single shot. What usually follows is a back-and-forth between me and my texture hoarding. An 8K texture for a trash bag might sound ridiculous, and yeah, it is… but who am I to judge?

I finished up a key flashback scene that adds some context to the MC’s current situation, and it felt really satisfying to wrap that up. I enjoy taking the time to build character realism and explain the events that shaped who they are today. I also had some fun with Barra this week, trying to find a character with a truly punchable face. Mission accomplished.

I’m now moving onto the date night scenes, and this week I’ll need to create the right apartment environment for Akari, who is currently the only love interest without a home of her own.

I’m still chasing down that 1,000 render milestone, but I haven’t crossed it just yet. I was hoping to hit it last week, but scene building took priority. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t cutting corners or compromising my vision for these sequences.

Hopefully by this time next week, I’ll be able to say I’ve hit that milestone. I also need to carve out some time for writing, since balancing all the spinning plates as a solo dev is always a bit of a juggling act.

Thanks again to everyone for the kind words and encouragement. It really helps keep me going.

Cheers, Bat
